The All Bengali Crime Detectives

Releasing March 2011…

The protagonists in the story are four recently retired Bengali men, who struggle to come to terms with their latest predicament. The lack of professional activity after retirement, coupled with an absence of purpose, results in apathy about life in general. In their heart of hearts, they fear a loss of identity; yet none voices this fear, this insecurity, as that would expose their vulnerable sides.

One day, the four of them find themselves in a somewhat thrilling situation; a crime takes place in their neighbourhood and they are the only witnesses. They cherish this new found excitement, clandestinely form a detective club, and eventually, after several faux-pas, solve the case. Though the crime and the subsequent investigation is the central thread that binds the story together, it is really a story about the four main characters – endearing, vulnerable, excitable, and full of failings that make one human.

The story is set in Calcutta, a city redolent of charm and nostalgia, a city struggling to cope with change and rapid modernisation; yet somewhere in her heart, she holds on to the past, to the things that make her unique, before she becomes any other metropolis. She is, in that sense, a character in her own right, much like the protagonists, who struggle to find meaning in a world that is fast writing them off.

    Hi Suparna,

The contemporary English Indian writing has been plagued by Chetan Bhagat imitations. Every Tom Dick and Harry springs up with a book trying to capture the teenage lives in a college or a MNC, each ending up being a worse imitation of the other.

In this flood of copycats, your writing is more than a breathe of fresh air. Being a Bengali myself I just could not subdue the smile as I read through your description of the typical Bengali society, cleverly wrapped up in a mystery thriller. The icing on the cake was your choice of retired oldies as your protagonists.

All throughout, you have intelligently captured the changes blowing over the Bengalis, the change in attitudes, in styles, the hopelessness of retirees and then their emancipation and yet kept it such simple and subtle. One striking feature of your writing was the use of Bengali twangs and the typical Bhadrolok conversation in this book, without having bothered to explain them in detail to the non-Bengali reader. It keeps the pace going on steadily and also helps keep the humour steadfast.

I don’t know if you are going to come up with a sequel, you have left too many threads over for that — Piya’s future with Potlu, ABCD’s next case, Bibhuti Roy’s family drama…… but do know that, there will be a lot many of us waiting patiently for that.

Kudos to your writing………… May your tribe increase !!!!

    Dear Suparna,

Just finished your book and it was such a comforting read…had good laughs now and then…it took me back to childhood and brought repentance that those good old days are no more…

But the reason for getting in touch is more personal as we have a common connection….yes..I am a Carmelite, a year junior…and I knew it even before I started your first chapter, when I reached the para in your acknowledgment that mentions ‘Basak Miss’ and Rita Dasgupta….and I totally agree with your comment….I think 90% Carmelite will vouch for them.. I regret that my daughter who is in class IV in Carmel will miss these gem of teachers…

Your achievement makes me proud as a fellow Carmelite and hope to see more books from you with the comment ‘from the international best seller…..’ on the cover….

Best of Luck and keep writing…
    Subarna.

Hello, Subarna! Its always exciting to hear from ex-Carmelites…Thanks for the comments on the book 🙂 I was recently able to get in touch with Ms Basak, and was pleasantly surprised that she could place me immediately. She was very touched to learn that she had been acknowledged in the book…

    Dear Suparna,

I am a great fan of detective stories, novels, films and tv-series. I have read everything from Dupin, Poirot and Holmes to their Indian avatars(all of them Bengali) – Byomkesh, Feluda and Ghanada, but I have never read anything like this ever before. I must congratulate you on your stupendous concept of this – awesome foursome..With your ‘ABCD’ you have changed the ABCD of this genre..I would love to read short-stories of ABCD..I would like to know why Bubai was behaving strangely and what happened to Poltu’s seemingly doomed love-story?? I wonder if I will I find a guide and raconteur as good as you, if and when I come to Calcutta(sorry, it will never be Kolkata for me),..I know the names of the sweet-shops for sure:-)

    Anticipating your response in print..
    Regards,
    Arya Dev.
